Rainy River Public Library - Use of the Internet Policy

In support of intellectual freedom, the staff of the library does not monitor, nor have control over information accessed or transmitted through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for content. Content on the Internet is unregulated and information may be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, or offensive. It is the user's responsibility to question the validity of any information.

• A signed registration form will be kept on file.

• The Rainy River Public Library is not responsible for information the user transmits over the internet.

• Patrons between the ages of seven to sixteen must have the approval of a parent or guardian who will sign the registration form.

• Patrons six years and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

• No single user can use the computer for more than one half hour.

• Internet service is free.

• No more than two people are allowed at the computer at any one time.

• Documents on the Internet may be printed. The fee for printing is: 1-10 copies-35 cents per copy; 11-20 copies- 30 cents per copy; 21 or more copies- 25 cents per copy. Colored printing is 10 cents extra per copy.

The Rainy River Public Library prohibits:

• The unauthorized installation, use, storage or distribution of copyrighted materials.

• The use of the patron's own software.

• Downloading of materials.

• The use of electronic mail (E-mail) using the Library's address.

• Subscription to mailing lists, bulletin boards or chat lines.

• Use of the system to store material.

The Library does not act in place of a parent or guardian and is not responsible for enforcing a parent or guardian’s rules of use. Unaccompanied youth under 16 must have a signed parental permission form on file.

The Library prohibits the use of its Internet for any illegal purposes, including:

* Harassment, libelling or slandering of others

* Display or dissemination of hate literature, child pornography, illicit drug literature or Pornographic materials as defined by the Criminal Code of Canada.

* Fraud or invasion of privacy

* Copyright infringements

* The viewing of pages which displays graphic pornography or overt sexual images.

The Library is not responsible for any loss of data or financial transactions which may occur during any system downtime. The Library also accepts no responsibility for any costs, liabilities or damages caused by any user.

THE USE OF LIBRARY COMPUTERS IS A PRIVILEGE.

INAPPROPRIATE USE WILL RESULT IN SUSPENSION OF ALL LIBRARY PRIVILEGES.
